Is there an add-on for OpenOffice 3.0 that will allow me to select text and translate it into a different language, or will I have to use an online translator and go piece by piece?
Don’t put your trust into ANY machine translators. They kind of work between French and English for very simple texts, because the 2 languages have a similar syntax. They do not work at all for languages like German or Russian with their plethora of morphemes and their complicated syntax.
Sometimes I put a text in for a laugh. It’s often very funny to put something in and then have the result translated back into the original language. Unless somebody went to the trouble to translate an idiomatic expression – and very often no-one did – all you will get is gibberish.

Please translate "the Great Patriach" into german. It’s something along the line of the original ancestor.
Thanks!
Assuming you really mean ‘the Great Patriarch’
German – das Grosse Familienoberhaupt – German roots
– der Grosse Patriarch – used as a borrowed word
Latin – Patriarcha Magnus

My translation of the song Belzébuth by Les Colocs. It’s sad not to be able to translate how poetic the original is.
I decided not to translate the name Belzebuth into Beelzebub, its litteral translation, because it is a proper name in the song, added to the fact that some lyrics would work less. I also favored feeling over litteral translations.
Belzébuth is a wonderful song about how life is either castratingly quiet, deadly dangerous, or… dead.
For additional context, André (Dédé) Fortin, the writer, composer and lead singer of the group (among other things), the guy on the final picture, killed himself by hara-kiri in 2000.
In my opinion, this song is the best of the group and never got the attention it deserved. I only hope that this translation is apt to transmit what I feel when I listen to it.

In the Simpsons Lisa speaks french to the crowd 5 minutes into the episode, what does she say? Can anybody translate? Episode 1503.
She says "J’accuse, Monsieur" so-and-so, which means "I accuse". It’s a reference to Emile Zola, who wrote an open letter to the French president in 1898 about a political coverup. It was a really big deal, but I’m not going to get into detail about it. You can read about it at this site, http://www.lawsch.uga.edu/academics/profiles/dwilkes_more/his9_jaccuse.html if you really care.

I DID NOT TRANSLATE THIS! This translation can be found on Herzeleid.com. This is not mine and you should not give me credit for the translations. I simply took the translations and put them in video form.

Translate:in english:
When I die I’ll become wind
And will live above your roof.
When you die, you’ll become the sun
And will still be above me.
I’ll be following you as autumn wind
around the world,
You won’t realize it and I will whisper to you insensibly:
“Oh, my sun, where are you?”
But please don’t become the sun yet,
I’ll sing the songs to you from the roof,
I’ll be again the one due to whom you breathe,
It’s only left to become wind.
I’m only gonna wait for your smile
And listen to your recordings,
Take snowflakes away from your eyelashes,
It’s only left to become wind.
When I die I’ll become wind,
I will cover the ground with the first snow,
I will laugh and follow you all over the world
And there will be no one happier than me.
When you die you’ll become the sun
And will steal my frost
And mimosa will be in blossom in gardens
And the heart’s ice will melt to tears.
But please don’t become the sun yet,
I’ll sing the songs to you from the roof,
I’ll be again the one due to whom you breathe,
It’s only left to become wind.
I’m only gonna wait for your smile
And listen to your recordings,
Take snowflakes away from your eyelashes,
It’s only left to become wind.

When you’re trying to learn to read and write a foreign language that doesn’t use the same alphabet that we do, how do you translate the symbols into English words. For example if $%*# is translated over in that language to the word "belian", how do I then know what "belian" means in English? Also how do I take an English word like "Duck" and translate it over into another language so that they woudl be able to understand it. I’m actually trying to learn to read and write Amharic. I just don’t have the fonts to show any examples in here.
Amharic is actually quite infamous as a very difficult language to read. I would recommend learning to read it as best you can (I can provide you with a good chart that I’ve used for Amharic transliterations in the past: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/ethiopic.htm), because finding an extensive dictionary that includes Latin transliterations of Amharic words will be very difficult.
Now, do you understand how Ge’ez script works? Each letter stands for a combination of a consonant and a vowel, so, for example, one letter might be transliterated as two or three when going from Ge’ez to English, whereas a single English letter could not be transliterated into Ge’ez, only combinations of letters that are compatible with the Amharic form of Ge’ez script.

My boss nags me for taking too long to translate documents, and I’m wondering if I’m really too slow or he’s just unaware of the time a regular quality translation takes.
Opinion of professional translators would be especially appreciated.
Hello! I’m a professional translator from French to English and I can usually translate between 300 and 400 words per hour. A bit more or less, depending on how technical the text is. The average translator can translate about 2000 words per day (if working full-time).
The average page usually contains from 250 to 300 words. Tables can contain more words and other formats (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) can vary significantly from this number.
As translators, we often have to balance time with quality based on how long we have to translate something before deadline. Good luck!
